Flame Retardants Used in Flexible Polyurethane Foam: An Alternatives Assessment Update—Draft for Public Comment

Abstract: EPA’s Design for the Environment Program (DfE) has posted a draft final report “Flame Retardants Used in Flexible Polyurethane Foam: An Alternatives Assessment Update” on the DfE web site (www.epa.gov/dfe) for a 60-day public comment period. The report updates and supplements the previous 2005 alternatives assessment report developed by the DfE Furniture Flame Retardancy Partnership (FFRP). The current report identifies flame retardant chemicals used to meet fire safety requirements for upholstered consumer products containing flexible polyurethane foam (FPUF), and updates flame retardant health and environmental profiles from the previous report with new information, using DfE’s current criteria for identifying chemical hazards.
