Threatened Status for Four Subspecies of Mazama Pocket Gopher

Abstract: We will finalize our proposal to list four subspecies of Mazama pocket gopher (Olympia, Tenino, Yelm, and Roy Prairie) as threatened species under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (Act). We will also make a final determination concerning a special rule to exempt take of the Mazama pocket gopher subspecies from limited activities on civilian airports, agricultural fields, and private landowner parcels under section 4(d) of the Act. We have determined that the Tacoma pocket gopher is extinct, and that the listing of three other subspecies of Mazama pocket gopher (Shelton, Cathlamet, and Olympic) is not warranted. These determinations fulfill our obligations under a settlement agreement. These are proposed regulations, and if finalized, the effect of these regulations will be to add these species to the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife. Critical habitat is under RIN 1018-AZ37.
