The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service announced a currently open
comment period for proposed rule changes governing the humane handling, care, treatment, and transportation of certain animals by dealers, research facilities, exhibitors, handlers, auctioneers, and carriers. The proposed changes pertain to requirements for the affected group and are intended to strengthen existing safeguards that prevent individuals and businesses who are unfit to hold a license from obtaining a license or working with regulated animals. The proposed rule also would reduce licensing fees and burdens, according to the USDA. Comments are due by October 23, 2017.
